Created in the Image of God (Imago Dei)

Genesis 1:26–27

1. Why is this topic important?

The question “What does it mean to be created in the image of God?” touches everything: How we think about ourselves, how we think about others, how we see God, how we understand our calling and how we receive the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is calling you to look deeper – not only at the “what,” but at the “why.”

2. Key Scriptures

Here are the verses that directly say that humanity is created in God’s image:

  • Genesis 1:26–27 – “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…”
  • Genesis 5:1 – “God made man in the likeness of God.”
  • Genesis 9:6 – “For in the image of God He made man.”
  • James 3:9 – “…people who are made in the likeness of God.”
  • Colossians 3:10 – “…renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.”
  • Ephesians 4:24 – “…the new man… created according to God in true righteousness and holiness.”

3. What does “image of God” mean?

The Bible shows four major dimensions.

A. The image is not physical

God is Spirit (John 4:24). The image of God is therefore not a bodily appearance.

This means: your value does not lie in your body, but in your being.

B. The image is your inner capacity

God built into you:

  • love (1 John 4:7–8)
  • reason / thought (Isaiah 1:18)
  • moral discernment (Romans 2:15)
  • free will (Deuteronomy 30:19)
  • creativity (Genesis 2:19–20)
  • consciousness / identity (Psalm 139:14)

These qualities reflect God’s character.

 C. The image is relationship

God is a relational God – Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

Humanity was created:

  • to walk with God (Genesis 3:8)
  • to live in love with others (John 13:34)
  • to have fellowship (Acts 2:42)

The fact that the Holy Spirit can dwell in you is part of the image.

 D. The image is calling

Genesis 1:26–28 shows that humanity:

  • is God’s representative on earth
  • received dominion/stewardship
  • carries responsibility for creation

The image of God is therefore also a task: to reflect God’s heart on earth.

 4. Your questions – and the Bible’s answers

❓ “Is it to look physically like God?”

No. God is Spirit. The image is spiritual, moral, relational.

❓ “Is it the capacity to live forever?”

Yes – God created humanity for eternal relationship (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

❓ “Is it the ability to love?”

Yes – love is the core of God’s nature (1 John 4:8).

❓ “Is it the ability to discern good and evil?”

Yes – God created humanity with moral capacity (Romans 2:15).

❓ “Was it Your will to give us the ability to discern?”

Yes – it is part of human responsibility and dominion.

❓ “Is it the ability to carry the Holy Spirit?”

Yes – humanity was created for God’s presence (1 Corinthians 3:16).

❓ “Is it because we are spirit, soul, and body?”

It is not the main definition, but it fits within the bigger picture of human design.

 5. The perfect image of God: Christ

Colossians 1:15 – “He is the image of the invisible God.”

Jesus shows us:

  • what the image looks like
  • how the image lives
  • how the image loves
  • how the image rules
  • how the image serves

And through the Holy Spirit we are restored into that image (Romans 8:29).

 6. Practical application

 A. How do I see myself?

I carry God’s image – I am valuable, loved, intended.

 B. How do I see others?

Every person carries God’s image – I treat them with honour.

 C. How do I live?

I live with purpose, love, discernment, and the Holy Spirit in me.

D. How do I serve?

I represent God’s heart in my home, work, ministry.

7. Personal reflection

  1. Which part of the image of God touches you the most.
  2. How does this truth change the way you think about yourself.
  3. How can you practically reflect God’s image this week.
  4. Which part of your life needs the Holy Spirit to restore the image of Christ.

 8. Prayer

Father, thank You that You created me in Your image. Restore in me everything that sin has distorted. Shape me through Your Spirit to become more like Jesus. Let Your love, Your wisdom, Your holiness, and Your heart flow through me. I am Your representative – use me for Your kingdom. Amen.
